For centuries, the province of Jaén was the frontier between the Kingdom of Castile and the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, which explains its defensive heritage. This guide brings together four fortresses you can visit (Baños de la Encina, Jaén, Alcalá la Real and Alcaudete) using only details we could check against official sources.

A route shaped by the frontier

According to Jaén Paraíso Interior, the cultural route “Castles and Battles of the Kingdom of Jaén” links fortresses and battle sites along the old frontier between Castile and Granada, and commemorates three battles: Baécula, Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) and Bailén (1808). Estimates of how many castles the province has vary depending on whether only castles or also towers and watchtowers are counted, so we do not give a single figure.

Four stops

Burgalimar Castle (Baños de la Encina)

According to InSpain, the founding plaque states that the work was finished in the year 968, under the Umayyad caliphate. The wall has fourteen towers, and the keep was added in Christian times. The visit is guided, with morning and afternoon sessions that change by season, and is booked online (MiReservaOnline) or by phone (+34 626 818 446). The sources we checked disagree on prices and hours, so confirm them before you go.

Santa Catalina Castle (Jaén)

It stands on Santa Catalina hill, next to the Parador de Jaén. After Ferdinand III conquered the city in 1246 it served as the king’s residence, according to tourist guides. Opening hours and entry conditions change by season, and some free-entry days require advance booking, so check before you climb up.

La Mota Fortress (Alcalá la Real)

This is a 13th- and 14th-century monumental complex built on earlier fortifications, a National Monument since 1931 and a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1993, according to InSpain. Highlights include the Puerta de la Imagen, the keep, the Renaissance Iglesia Mayor Abacial (built over a Gothic church), the Frontier Life Interpretation Centre and the “Hidden City”, a set of underground galleries. The published hours are 10:00 to 18:00 from 15 September until April, and 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 May to 14 September, closed on 1 and 6 January and 25 December. Tickets and guided visits are booked through MiReservaOnline; check current prices there.

Alcaudete Castle

Its Interpretation Centre of the Order of Calatrava (Plaza de Santa María, s/n) tells, according to Jaén Paraíso Interior, the story of the building: from Almohad fortress to a castle reworked by the Calatrava friars, with a new castle and a palace for the lords of the town. The published hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 in winter and 9:00 to 13:00 and 18:00 to 21:00 in summer, closed Monday and Tuesday. Information phone: 953 560 304.
